The Hotel Balmes houses a collection of African art focused mainly on pieces from the Sudanese sub-Saharan region, a vast area of Central Africa stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. The collection is composed of masks and three-dimensional wooden sculptures used by many ethnic groups in the area. These pieces represent mythological and ancestral beings, spirits, or supernatural forces that exert influence over the community.

This fascinating collection includes masks from the Soninké and Baoulé peoples, as well as ibeji figures of the Yoruba people: anthropomorphic sculptures, usually in male-female pairs, that represent spirits revered through prayers and offerings. Also notable is a Kota reliquary, a stylized wooden figure covered with copper or brass, used as a spiritual protector of the deceased.
