The Hotel Balmes houses a collection of African art pieces, primarily from the Sudanese Sub-Saharan region—an extensive area of Central Africa stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. The collection features masks and three-dimensional wooden sculptures used by various ethnic groups in the region. These works represent mythological and ancestral beings, spirits, or supernatural forces believed to influence the community.

This fascinating collection includes masks from the Soninké and Baoulé peoples, as well as ibeji figurines from the Yoruba culture—anthropomorphic sculptures, typically in male-female pairs, representing spirits that are honored with prayers and offerings. A notable piece is a Kota reliquary, a stylized wooden figure covered in copper or brass, used as a spiritual protector of the deceased.
