JORDI CLOS
President of Derby Hotels Collection
In addition to being a hotelier, Jordi Clos is an Egyptologist, collector and art patron. He chairs the Clos Archaeological Foundation and the Egyptian Museum in Barcelona, the largest private collection of Egyptian art in Europe on public display, and has been financing archaeological excavations in Egypt for over twenty years.
The Balmes Hotel exhibits a collection of art pieces from Africa, mainly from the Sudanese sub-Saharan region, the vast area of central Africa stretching from the Atlantic to the Red Sea. Three-dimensional masks and sculptures carved in wood and used by the majority of the ethnic groups in the area, representing their mythological and ancestral beings, spirits or supernatural forces that exercise power over the community.
This fascinating collection includes masks of the Soninke and Baoulé ethnic groups, as well as ibeji statuettes from the Yoruba groups, anthropomorphic pieces that usually go in pairs of different sexes and that represent revered spirits with prayers and offerings. There is also a kota shrine, stylised wooden figure covered in copper or brass used as a spiritual protector for the dead.
